You have to be kidding!” “I don’t have time to plan meals!” “I don’t need to plan my meals; I’ll just stop at a restaurant. ” Many people across the country are saying this when asked if they plan their meals. But, if you want to save time, save money and become healthier, it is extremely important. Here are some tips to help you plan healthier meals:



Get Organized

Take a look at what is in your pantry, your refrigerator and your freezer. Go through your favorite recipes and check out new recipes online. Now, you have an idea of the ingredients you can use for your meals and some recipes that you know and love OR would like to try.

Print out the recipes and write down the ingredients that you don’t have for them. Be sure to write down essential ingredients like salt or flour that you might be getting low on. Do your shopping and you’ll have everything ready for the week’s meals.

Try Something Different

Every week or so, try something new. Introduce new dishes to your family and take note of those that they love — or hate. Make meal time exciting! Meals should be relaxing, happy times for the entire family. They won’t be happy if they don’t like the food.

Watch Cooking Methods

Don’t fry in fat or use fatty foods in your recipes. Try steaming, stir-frying, baking or roasting. Using these methods will also help maintain the nutrients of the foods used in the recipes. Even boiling vegetables leaches the vitamins out of them with the steam.

Provide Healthy Snacks

It doesn’t make much sense to plan healthy meals and then snack on potato chips and cookies. Make sure that there are healthier choices such as fruits and veggies available for your family to snack on.
